Patcham’s Big Open House – Arts and Crafts to enjoy, even buy.

Weekends in May: 13th-14th, 20th-21st, 27th-28th; 10am – 5pm

2017 will be the 4th anniversary of Patcham Arts, which has shown each May at the Patcham Community Centre, since 2014, as part of the Brighton Artist Open House scheme. Tricia Tyler, who nursed it from an idea, through to a suggestion at a Patcham Community Association meeting and onward to a reality, is both amazed and delighted: "I knew that in our community were some very talented people. It was just a question of finding and bringing them together".

Tricia, a former Chair of Patcham Community Association, is grateful for the ongoing support and funding offered by the community association: "Put simply, we couldn't have done it without them" Patcham Arts aims to give people the opportunity of seeing and purchasing original art, by local artists, some of whom show regularly in galleries and exhibitions throughout the UK and abroad. "Like any new venture it takes time to establish"; says Tricia "but we are attracting more visitors each year. I believe we have created something of great value and I am pleased that the Patcham Community Centre is at the heart of it".

"In 2016 we invited students from Patcham High School to exhibit their work alongside the professional and established artists. This was a great success and there were a lot of proud parents. This will continue in 2017 along with the free workshops or 'tasters' offered by our own artists.”
The artists who show with Patcham Arts offer a range of work in disciplines which includes jewellery, painting, wood turning, ceramics, felt making, textiles and photography.

The Patcham Community Centre is located in Ladies Mile Road next to Patcham High School and the Patcham Library. The show is held on the upper floor of the community centre which is accessible by a lift. Everyone is welcome and there is always an artist ‘on duty’ happy to discuss the work on display. During the show the entrance to the community centre is marked by two large feather flags displaying the Patcham Arts logo and there is a seating area, amongst the exhibits, where visitors can relax with refreshments supplied by a local caterer ‘Cakes the Difference’.

“We are a friendly group showing art work to interest all tastes and budgets and welcome local residents and visitors alike” says Tricia.
